The Challenge
The Pixel is Google's flagship phone that has become a serious contender for the latest Samsung and even iPhone devices. The Pixel onboarding experience happens when you first turn on your new device and is incredibly important in helping users onboard to the Google ecosystem and personalize their experience.
Our challenge was to allow people to add different forms of payment to their Google Pay account in a couple of emerging markets. We needed to support the UPI payment method in India and the DCB payment method in Indonesia — involving a deeper understanding of how these payment methods work, and making sure these experiences would launch seamlessly on all of the new Pixel devices.
Project Outcome
Significant lift in saved payment methods
After launch we saw a significant lift in the amount of payment methods saved to the Google ecosystem — one of our main objectives. This increase makes the Pixel experience better by allowing people to more easily pay anywhere that Google Pay is accepted.
Latest Material design standards
We had to balance Material Design standards with our Payments Platform capabilities. Dynamic color required us to use the latest style tokens from Material Design so that unique color profiles could be displayed depending on what device the user was setting up.
A focus on accessible design
Accessible design practices were used to ensure the experience was not only technically accessible, but usable by screenreader users. This was done in close collaboration with engineering through "greenlines" we delivered alongside our designs.
All devices, all orientations
One of the biggest challenges was designing for new devices whose specs were being finalized at the same time. We collaborated closely with the Pixel team to make sure we were aligned with the latest requirements across all form factors.
